Alfonso Cervera // Poc - Chuc class description

A Mexican American hybrid movement dance form that exchanges embodied knowledge between Ballet Folklorico, Afro-Latine social dances, and Modern dance, to experiment with the possibilities of how these forms intersect, challenge, and collaborate with one another. The practice of Poc-Chuc intentionally works to offer new choreographic methods, techniques, and perspectives in theory and physical embodiment. This movement class will be a fusion of these techniques that will create rigor, SWEAT, and dancing in community.

ALICE SVETIC BIO (They/Them) dancer+choreographer+educator, is an adjunct instructor of Dance at Hollins University where they teach ballet and contemporary dance practices. Originally from Milwaukee, WI, Alice graduated with distinction from the University of Wisconsin- Madison with a BFA in Dance and from Hollins University with a Master of Fine Arts in Dance. Their current interests lie in contemporary dance performance, dance making, and radical dance pedagogy. Their research centers around critical feminist and queer dance teaching perspectives, viewership politics, and the performative body. Alice has spent meaningful time at the B12 Festival in Berlin, San Francisco Conservatory of Dance, with Andrea Miller’s GALLIM, and under the mentorship of Alex Ketley and David Maurice in The HAVEN’s 2021 choreographic mentorship program. They have danced in the works of Alex Ketley, Banning Bouldin, Anton Lachky, Sean Curran, The Seldoms, and Katy Pyle, among many others. Alice’s choreographic works have been featured at Midwest RAD Fest 2021 and 2023, DanceWorks Chicago’s DanceChance 2021, and SALT Contemporary Dance’s 2020 SHAPE choreography festival, where their solo Lullaby was awarded first place. Alice premiered their first evening length solo performance, Departure Dances, in May of 2021 at the Backspace Gallery in Madison, WI.

ALFONSO CERVERA BIO (He/They/El), sometimes known as Fonzy, introduces himself under the categories of Queer, Mexican American, first-generation, activist, curator, and educator. These are the platforms in which he claims and shares his embodied experience as a professor and artist with newer generations. Currently living between the borders of Los Angeles, CA, and Columbus, Ohio. Cervera creates works in various other localities collaborating and exchanging embodied practices of the Mexican American experience. He has begun a new position as an Assistant Professor at the Ohio State University, where his research and specialization as an independent artist, focuses on the conversation between Ballet Folklorico and Afro-LatinX social dances in a contemporary auto-biographical embodied experience that he calls Poc-Chuc. The practice of Poc-Chuc intentionally works to offer new choreographic methods, techniques, and perspectives in theory and physical embodiment. Along with teaching, Fonzy is also the Executive Director of Show Box LA, a non-profit organization providing platforms for BIPOC and Queer artists' residencies and opportunities to share work with the wider LA community. His collaborative and independent works have been presented at the Judson Church Movement Research (New York City), Festival of Latin Contemporary Choreographers (San Francisco), Red Cat (Los Angeles), Pieter Performance Space (Santa Monica, CA), Highways Performance Space (Santa Monica), Bushwick Studios (New York), and Lux Boreal’s 4x4 in Tijuana Mexico to name a few. His work has also been presented at numerous festivals, universities, and in non-traditional spaces.

J. BOUEY BIO (They/Them) is a 2023 Bessie Award Outstanding Performer recipient, the founder of The Dance Union Podcast, initiator of the NYC Dancers COVID-19 Relief Fund and The Dance Union Town Hall For Collective Action to support the dance community through numerous world-changing events. As a creator, J. is a recent 2021-2022 Jerome Fellow and is a 2022/2023 Movement Research Artist in Residence. J. Bouey was also recently a Gibney 2021 Spotlight Artist, Artist-In-Residence at CPR – Center for Performance Research, and 2021 Bogliasco Fellow. J. was also a 2018 Movement Research Van Lier Fellow, and 2018 Dancing While Black Fellow. J. is currently a collaborator with nia love. They were also a former performer with Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company, danced with Germaul Barnes’ Viewsic Dance, Maria Bauman’s MB Dance, Dante Brown, Antonio Brown Dance, Christal Brown’s INspirit Dance, and apprenticed with Emerge 125 (formerly Elisa Monte Dance) under the artistic direction of Tiffany Rea-Fisher.
